Ever find yourself in those times when your plate has become so full it seems you’ve pushed God off the plate completely? I have found myself in that predicament far too often! How about a different approach? How about dessert first?
The thing is, when I put my relationship with God on the plate of life with everything else – I don’t really PUSH Him off to the side….I scooch Him off inch by precious inch – that slow fade effect Casting Crowns sings about. And here’s what happens:
I find myself awake in the wee hours of the morning; thinking of the many things on the “TO DO” List! Job responsibilities: unrealistic deadlines, short-staffed, you name it….. add in financial obligations: auto repairs, home repairs, a multitude of unexpected expenses…out of town guests: a blessing for certain, yet stressful…family illnesses…the list goes on and on…
And before I know it, I’m tempted to hit the ground running trying to cross off a few of those To Do items and trying to squeeze God in somewhere in the middle of it all! Well, it’s easy enough to see where that can lead…running in circles, exhausted, overwhelmed, unproductive….And I can’t help but wonder why we (at least for me) tend to do the same thing over and over expecting different results – seems Einstein defines that type of behavior as insanity -it is a little nutty, isn’t it?????
Usually it’s not until I’m in a tail spin that I realize what I’ve done… call it whatever you like, it boils down to control. I’m reminded of a text conversation – it was about changes in our lives – what stuck in my head was the last word of the conversation: SURRENDER
Webster defines surrender as the act to give oneself up, as into the power of another; submit or yield. Surrendering our will to God’s will isn’t a one time act – it is daily – hourly – minute by minute. When I started this leg of my journey, one of the first verses that came to me was Proverbs 3:5-6 – as with all of God’s Word, it takes on a deeper meaning daily and has EVERYTHING to do with surrender:
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
When my daughter was little and we’d go out to eat, the first thing she would focus on was dessert! We’d all laugh, but when you think about it…she saw dessert as the prize and no matter what was on her plate she ALWAYS allowed sufficient room – if you gave her a choice, she would have eaten dessert first!
What if….what if we approach our relationship with God the same way? Dessert first! What if we don’t try to fit Him in on our very full plates – what if we surrender our full plates to Him? Afterall, a relationship with Him is the prize – when we seek Him first to direct our steps…spend time with Him first versus trying to squeeze Him in on our full plates…the To Do Lists of our lives become much more manageable and time much more productive because we are living through His will and His strength and His timing… food for thought!
